Lily and Jamie try to avoid its threat, but a visit from Kenton leaves Lily with no choice. It’s telling that in a show so dedicated to the infinite possibilities of computer engineering, Lily’s importance in the story never has anything to do with the fact that she is a computer engineer. We can’t skip through the commercials because we need the time to catch our breath and recoup. For me, it’s a frustrating missed opportunity. She cuts scars around her eyes, telling Octavia that Azgeda warriors do this to “symbolize the pain is over, the wound is healed.” Echo understands that the Disciples only care about the war — which means they’re all recruits, not prisoners. All that humorlessly hyperlinked self-importance removes Devs from the casual humanity of even the most ornate Black Mirrors. The fact that they are all on ONE EPISODE of television, it is unbearable. On tonight’s Survivor season, 39 episode 9 called “Two For The Price Of One,” as per the CBS synopsis, “An unexpected twist shakes up the game and sends two people home.. Another capital-c Choice is Mizuno’s performance as Lily. The first thing to grab me about Devs was an aerial shot from Lily and Sergei’s commute. Home to them is the people they love; they find identity, comfort, and acceptance in their clan. She’s certainly made some less than ideal choices. He then tells her that Echo and Octavia are there, but that Bellamy is dead. It’s a whole thing. From there, Devs becomes a shockingly dull exercise in violent prestige blandness, with half-formed conceptuality sprinkled atop a flat-out goofy thriller. “The lengths you’ll go.” Is that a little corny? “You’re just mad because I turned out to be a killer like you,” Hope says. The flagship project is Devs, a science-fiction miniseries premiering March 5 on Hulu. I suspect it would offend Garland’s tasteful sensibilities to make Forest a monster of capitalism enabling dictators via ad-targeting while snorting up real estate in New Zealand, like an actual tech CEO. In episode 7, one character starts reciting Philip Larkin; one episode later, the same character reads “The Second Coming,” by W.B. Devs recap: Blasts from the past By Matt Cabral March 26, 2020 at 01:13 AM EDT You know, the leader of the doomsday cult who also burned Becca, the mother of the First Apocalypse, at the stake. And that’s when Diyoza wants to know what Gabriel told her: Diyoza hears her daughter describe her life and her mistakes…like mass murder. It irritated me at first, especially in the early episodes, but over time it began to make sense: As the foundation of Lily’s world disintegrates beneath her, she overcompensates by speaking ever more slow-ly and de-lib-er-ate-ly. Still, what I love most about the show is that it tackles wonky, philosophical sci-fi tropes in wonderfully unpredictable ways. At the same time, Forest and Katie begin their day, with the familiar multiple instances of Forest and his daughter playing out again in the street. While we don't agree on the success of Devs’ storytelling, Darren, I'm guessing we share an appreciation for the cast. Which performances stood out to you the most? And she definitely doesn’t want Hope following in her footsteps. DARREN: As I boarded the floating elevator to the vacuum-sealed chamber inside the pyramid where I watch all my TV, I knew two things about Devs. I do love a good chilly Black Mirror-esque dreadfest, Kristen. Probably the most important part of that exchange was seeing Madi’s drawings, which look a lot like an Anomaly Stone opening up. Summary. Devs Episode 6 After a shitty couple of days of Russian handlers and doctored CCTV footage and brief psych ward stays, Lily finally confronts Forest to learn exactly what Devs is up to. Just then, they get an alert that someone is coming through from Nakara: Enter Clarke and her team (with guns, obviously). And honestly, I don’t really care. So is level 13 only for the Shepherd? “Doing the right thing the wrong way isn’t the right thing,” she tells her. © Copyright 2020 Meredith Corporation. Apparently, this was one of OG Kaylee Prime’s plans, so no one should be the wiser that this is actually a deeply personal endeavor for her. Garland’s style approximates religious awe: choirs on the soundtrack, dialogue about Messiahs, the neon cathedral of Devs itself. Gabriel tells her that they’ve been waiting on them. His mother cries, hugs him, and tells him they had named him Sachin, which means “pure.” His father holds back. Anders is there and knows all about Gabriel’s work and research on the Sanctum stone. Her measured, meticulous delivery of every word only gets more and more pronounced as the craziness of the story progresses. The game is taking forever, and Murphy is just catching on that Sheidheda is purposefully dragging it out. Grenier is one of the great character actors, and his bureaucratic bearing becomes oddly charming as he starts reigning general terror. You can take nothing at face value — in this case, literally. S7 E16 Recap The 100 series finale recap: It's the end of the world. First: Every episode is written and directed by Garland, a filmmaker I sort of admire. He explains that the Shepherd teaches them that “winning the final war brings about the final evolution of the species.” And they’ll find “transcendence through the stone.” The Disciples' leader wants Gabriel to join the cipher team to help them understand how to unlock it. But the show’s rigid focus on ultimate cruciality of Lily and Forest leaves Katie in a subservient position — and reflects my deeper suspicion that Devs is yet another two-hour movie idea stretched to miniseries length with blind-alley plot turns and nonsense personalities. Hope starts crying about how she lost her mother all those years ago. You can check out our thoughts on the. Hear me out, “From the ashes, we will rise” later becomes a Grounder prayer that expanded to “Old life and new. We'll have to circle back after the finale to debate the (to my eyes totally inane) final answer that Devs coughs up for its existential questions. We get a lot of portentous, opaque peeks into the Devs computer bay, where Cailee Spaeny and Stephen McKinley Henderson play a show-stealing pair of computer engineers. Mizuno was a fun deadpan presence in Ex Machina and Netflix’s Maniac, but she’s just not compelling as a driven investigator. (Also, characters in the Devs lab spend a lot of time staring in awe at a powerful processor of some kind… but it just looks like an elaborate espresso maker.). This review contains spoilers for Watchmen episode 8, "A God Walks Into Abar." Murphy is trying to keep his head down and play this game, but Sheidheda wants to taunt him and talk about power and being a survivor and yada yada yada. A man on the team says the last discovery they had on the stone (when they discovered the 10-digit code that allows them to power the anomaly) happened before he was even born. That’s why it’s so difficult for Emori and Nelson to trust people. For too long, Lily’s stranded far from the essential question: What is Devs? Created by Alex Garland. KRISTEN: Here’s where I think our interpretations diverge: For you, the show’s essential question is “What is Devs?” For me, I got hooked on another question: Why is Devs? Bellamy is being classic Bellamy, telling Echo that he forgives her for the things she’s done in the past and that they’re a team now. That foreboding is juxtaposed with our first meeting with Forest himself, which is so maddeningly, hilariously obnoxious (and accurate, as anyone who’s worked at a tech company will tell you): He shows up late to a meeting, then proceeds to eat dry greens with his hands while Sergei gives the most important presentation of his young career. I’d be more convinced by all the predestination soliloquies if the plot didn’t feel tram-lined through so many clichés and phony notes of unearned catharsis. That massive metal child, staring dead-eyed over the Devs landscape, is our first indication that something is most definitely off about this place, and the guy who runs it. But for all his portentous prophesying and messianic leadership style, Forest is still absolutely leveled by a video of his daughter blowing bubbles. Most of these characters have never really had one: They’ve lived on rings in the sky, bunkers under the ground, or bounced around between the two. Here, cauterized grief is pretty much the only note Offerman gets to play. Which, in a strange way, turns Devs into propaganda for the technocracy. To be sure, Devs seems to have less to say about “weaponized private data” than it does about the very nature of existence: Do humans have free will, or do our lives run on predetermined “tram lines,” as Forest believes? As the bus travels out of the city to Amaya’s secluded campus, the camera zooms back to reveal something… strange looming over the tree line: a giant statue of a curly-haired little girl, her hands raised in a pose of excitement or wonder. As a mother, she only wanted Hope to see her as her mommy — not a killer. She relays all this to Nelson, who is refusing to join the ceremony. Lily and Jamie try to avoid its threat, but a visit from Kenton leaves Lily with no choice. Their odd-couple interaction feels beamed in from a Philip K. Donovan wins boyfriend of the year for coming to Julia’s fertility appointment even though we agree that it’s way too soon for him to make embryos with Julia. And then the episode ends with Anders: He heads to level 13, where he puts his hand on a Second Dawn triangle symbol and says, “From the ashes, through the bridge, the Shepherd will rise.” If you remember, there were 12 levels in Second Dawn before the First Apocalypse. There’s a thread about government interference that only exists to prove Devs has budget for a helicopter. I want a world where we can all have respectful and intensive arguments about mature sci-fi TV series, Kristen. Sheidheda says that Kaylee is too soft and the ceremony will fail without Daniel. Not to be deterred, Emori swipes his drinking glass from the tavern like she’s Olivia Benson and passes it off to Jackson, who's doing all the DNA testing. The episode itself is OK. At its best, this show is only about 2.5 stars. I think one too many Mind Drive swaps may have fried his common sense. That would require imagination, something Devs can only simulate. After giving a successful presentation involving a nematode, Sergei is promoted to Amaya’s special, highly secretive Devs division. Below Deck Recap: Dinner and a Show A delicious episode serves up a tasting menu of all the different types of drama this crew has to offer. She says she’s drawing people and things she’s never seen. On some level, watching Madame de Maintenon get her comeuppance is cathartic, particularly after her wretched behavior in “Trust Issues” (Season 3, Episode 2). If you’ll recall, Emori was also considered a “null,” or a “frikdreina” as the Grounders referred to people with deformities, and was tossed out as a child. From the ashes, we will rise.” FROM THE EARTH, WE WILL GROW?? But from the start, it's clear that he really is a thoughtful, horizon-seeking philosopher-king opening the doors of perception in an expensively furnished dark room, so modest and self-flagellating that he still lives in his pre-billionaire house. She does deserve to be punished — at least a little — for having Liselotte’s son taken away from her. They’re alive now, but things are definitely not looking good for the Primes. Although Emori would jump at the chance to reconnect with the family that abandoned her, Nelson isn’t feeling the reunion vibes. Over at the Unification Ceremony, Nelson’s parents, who Emori tracked down, have shown up. When Sergei first gets the offer to join Devs, he’s so overcome that he tears up. Then Nikki and the rest of the prisoners enter the room with guns and arm the Children of Gabriel. KRISTEN: The central premise of this eight-episode miniseries from Alex Garland (Annihilation) is simple: A computer engineer named Lily (Sonoya Mizuno) tries to figure out what happened after her boyfriend goes missing. And the decision to cast a woman — albeit one with beautifully androgynous features — in this role is just one more way that everything in Devs is designed to leave the viewer a little disoriented. But even the not-exactly-subtle Westworld nailed some trenchant commentary on weaponized private data, before everyone turned into revolutionary shape-changers. Back at the Anomaly Stone, Gabriel and his cipher crew are working. “All I want to do is go back to the way things were, but we can’t,” she says. He even says that Murphy should be a god who has numerous women, not just a “frikdreina.” Murphy says the Dark Commander just hates women because his mother gave him up to fight in the conclave, and then Lexa became everyone’s favorite Commander after him. Forest shoving greens in his mouth is another telling detail: This is a guy so focused on his goal that he almost resents his body’s need for sustenance. My, aren’t we fancy! Diyoza tells her daughter that it wasn’t her responsibility to rescue her; it’s the other way around. And I absolutely love that Garland chose to cast actress Cailee Spaeny as 19-year-old Lyndon. She asks if Echo taught her to fight, to which Hope says, “No my father did that…Dev.” She explains that he showed up six months after Diyoza and Octavia left, and she did everything she could to get back to them. Inside the cryo chamber is ‘ol Bill himself, who Anders calls “Shepherd.” Bill assumes he’s being woken up because they’ve “cracked the code and the war has begun.” Anders says no, but they’ve found the key: Clarke. After his betrayal, Gabriel awakes in a cell before guards drag him out and take him back to the Anomaly Stone. Yeats. Sky Ring is actually a prison world for Bardo. But if you’re going to give me a sleekly designed not-quite-alternate reality featuring a terrifying computer code and a floating elevator, your story had better have a heart. She says she trained for 15 years under two different Disciples just to save her mother. I just don’t think this is it. What did you know about Devs going in, Darren, and what were your first impressions?
