The second links at Troon, the “Portland” created by Fernie in 1895 and formerly known as the Relief course, has its moments of excellence too but undeniably plays second fiddle by some margin. I am afraid that feeling pervades to it’s wee sister course, the Portland (I say sister because I think it was, and still is, set aside predominately for the lady members). The layout lacks excitement and there are no spectacular holes. I am just about to commit golf review hara-kiri here by stating that I don’t rate the championship course at Royal Troon. The course is more than enough for mid to high indexes or women to enjoy while offering a few challenges. A very warm welcome and I would return. Hurry, our best deals go fast! I suspect many golf tourists pushed to fit in Prestwick, Turnberry etc. None of them are difficult without facing a strong wind. It is a beautifully looking links in my opinion but it doesn’t have the stunning scenery of nearby Turnberry, the history of St. Andrews, the demands of Carnoustie, the quirk of St. Georges, the dunes of Birkdale, the reverence of Muirfield nor has it produced the great players that Hoylake has. There are some terrific holes such as the dog-leg 3rd, the longish par 5 11th and the par 3 16th, with the 17th being a very tough hole with a ditch running along the left with gorse along the right. For me, the proximity of the Old Course and views across the fairways and famous landmarks only improved my enjoyment of Portland. Portland Course. It is not a golf course you would go out of your way to play as there are so many better golf courses nearby. I consider the tenth hole to be the class of the five par threes. There are better courses for less than half the price as part of Troon Links. Darley – recently tamed, but still recognised as one of the most challenging courses to play to your handicap. Steer clear of the gorse and railway line on the early holes, avoid the ditches on some of the closing holes and keep out of the cleverly positioned bunkers all during the round to have a good chance of playing to handicap on a very fair and somewhat understated test of golf. The course was in great condition and for much of the course there was good variety between the holes.
